1.1. Important informations before starting

1.1.2. Vehicle Types

For each category of vehicle and each type of road, an average speed is derived from multiple studies. This average speed takes into account the time spent on traffic or stopping in front of traffic lights. It does not take into account the time spent searching for parking spaces or deliveries.


For average speed calculation in Mapotempo, the Light Vehicle profile uses a range of information to deduce the speed on each segment of the route. If the speed limit is available in Open Street Map, it will be used. Otherwise, a weighting is applied according to the type of road. Then the speed is decreased in urban/business areas, and decreased further in city centers. Finally, Open Street Routing Map itself uses a number of parameters: penalties are added for each bend, set of traffic lights, road width and surface type. Fastest

The routing engine takes the shortest journey time as its basis.

  1. For light vehicles (LV) of less than 3.5 t:

    • in urban areas and peripheries, this average speed is 18 km/hour

    • in inter-urban areas (outside urban areas, for example: routes on a township, county or more), this average speed is 30 km/hour.

  2. For heavy goods vehicles (HGVs) of more than 3.5 t, the default speed is defined by HERE maps (ex-Nokia Map), specialist in the transit of heavy goods vehicles. The planning and the optimization of the routes are studied according to a road network adapted to HGVs vehicles.

  3. For cycles, the average speed is between 16 km/h and 20 km/h. Cycling routes are designed for delivery tricycles.

  4. For pedestrians, the average speed is between 4 km/h and 5 km/h.

At present, this option is only available for light vehicles (LV).

1.1.3. Map

Because of its reliability, frequent updates and the ability to interact with the map, Mapotempo has chosen ‘OpenStreetMap <>’_ for light vehicles. This offers the Mapotempo user the best tool available on the market.

Although powered and updated daily by a large community of public sector and private contributors, OpenStreepMap mapping may in some places have non-updated information. This is related to the fact that roads and traffic plans are constantly changing.

For information purposes, it is estimated that 200 000 new addresses are created annually in France.

If, for example, some roads or one way streets are not up to date, you can directly make changes to OpenStreetMap (by clicking on the link below, then follow the instructions). We can train you in the use of the mapping update tool. You can also contact us to update the map on the basis of your information.



1.1.4. Geocoding

Geocoding involves assigning geographic coordinates (longitude / latitude) to an address. Mapotempo includes in its functionalities automatic geocoding.

Although we use the best available geocoding services on the market, it is up to you to enter your addresses (street number, complete street name without abbreviation, etc.) so that the geocoding service interprets them correctly and positions them right on the map.

The quality of the addresses is important especially when importing massive files. The operation of importing massive files into Mapotempo may thus require a control on your part in order to validate the correct positioning of your addresses on the map.

In this case, you can set the point directly on the map to the right position. For an import that does not require any control, you also have the possibility to integrate in your file the GPS coordinates of your addresses.

1.1.5. Optimization

Mapotempo uses the most relevant optimization algorithms. We have limited the computation time dedicated to optimization with the aim of creating a balance between optimization precision and computation time.

If the order of the planned and automatically optimized route by Mapotempo seems to merit adjustments, it is possible to modify the order manually by “drag and drop”.

1.1.6. Limits

Maximum number of clients in the address database: 10 000.

Default maximum number of plans: 20. The maximum number of plans can be increased by Support, upon request. Warning: a high number of plans can slow down optimization considerably.

Default maximum number of zones: 20. The maximum number of zones can be increased by Support, upon request.

Maximum number of avoidance zones: 20. This limit cannot be overridden.

Default maximum number of vehicle configurations: 1. The maximum number of vehicle configurations can be increased by Support, upon request.

Maximum number of vehicles: according to your subscription. You can ask Support for a new quote to increase your number of vehicles. You can activate/deactivate a vehicle according to your needs or constraints.
